In an attempt to better serve the staff of the Utah Department of Corrections, the Training Academy has developed alternative methods for delivering types of training. Many of the classes presented in the Department are based on what an individual knows, and in the past have been delivered using a directive approach to teaching. As often as these classes are repeated, it is safe to say that most, if not all of the staff, have the knowledge necessary in each of the mandatory topics to meet any training requirements. Many of these topics have been revised and formatted into a Distant Learning Program. Staff members completing training in various topics must pass the accompanying test. This allows participants to receive the necessary training, at their own pace, within the workplace and allows supervisors to verify that staff members have completed the course and achieved a level of competency approved by the Department.
