The Firearms Training Unit is responsible for all firearms and less lethal weapons training. It is also responsible for the development of curriculum and instructors for firearms training.
Firearms training takes place in both the Pre-Service and In-Service programs.
In addition, the Firearms Unit is responsible for conducting annual preventative maintenance inspections for all firearms in the Department, for testing and evaluating current and proposed firearms, ammunition, less lethal devices and munitions and body armor for the Department, and for scheduling and maintaining the ranges used for firearms training.
