Preparing Offenders for Success
EDUCATION
The majority of offenders come to the Department of Corrections with less than a high school education. We offer basic education through high school, GED, literacy, life skills and other programs that educate the offender. Salt Lake Community College and Snow College offer many vocational training programs at the Draper and Gunnison sites, including Automotive, Building Trades, Electronics, and Computer Science.
EMPLOYMENT
Utah Correctional Industries offers a wide variety of training experiences, including Computer Assisted Drafting, Printing, Woodworking, Technical/Vocational Apprenticeships and Computers.
YPREP (YOUR PAROLE REQUIRES EXTENSIVE PREPARATION)
VISION: To prepare offenders for successful transition into society from an incarcerated state.
MISSION: It is the mission of the YPREP operation to aid in successful transition of the incarcerated, back to society. This requires preparation prior to release relative to their individual needs such as: Housing, Employment, Transportation, Child Care and Health Care.
The Department of Corrections has teamed up with multiple state agencies and private organizations to assist offenders in accessing various programs prior to re-entering the community. Some of the organizations include Department of Child and Family Services, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Work Force Services and Volunteers of America. YPREP operates out of the Timpanogos housing facility at the Utah State Prison.
