Internships

The Utah Department of Corrections internship program is designed to provide student interns with a practical, hands-on field experience. Many of the internship positions are in areas that are considered safety-sensitive. To protect interns, staff, offenders and the community, it is necessary to require that all interns and safety staff meet standards set forward by Peace Officer Standards and Training. Please take a moment to review the following requirements. If you have a questions regarding any of these conditions, please contact the DHRM Intern Coordinator for clarification.

Requirements

1. Must be a United States citizen.
If the candidate is a naturalized citizen, a naturalization certificate must accompany the application.
2. Must be a high school graduate.
A copy of a high school diploma, a high school transcript showing graduation date, a GED certificate, or a college or university transcript must accompany the application.
3. If the applicant has served in the military, he/she must have received an honorable discharge.
A copy of the DD214 showing the discharge type must be included with the application. A dishonorable discharge will result in a denial of application for training and certification. A general discharge may result in a denial of application for participation in the internship program. Other discharge types will be evaluated and may affect the certification process.
4. The applicant must have an acceptable driving record.
Under POST rules, an individual may have no more than three driving violations and convictions in the past two years. Any applicant who has four or more driving violations will be denied until such time as no more than three violations are reflected within a two-year period. In addition, DUI convictions will be given special attention. No individual will be admitted to the internship program within two years of conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol. No individual with more than two convictions for DUI will be accepted. In the event that an individual was arrested for DUI, and was allowed to plead to a lesser offense, the conviction will be considered as a DUI conviction.

Criminal Record

No individual who has been convicted of a felony may apply for admission to the internship program.
Convictions for felonies result in a sentence to a prison for a period of one year or more. At the discretion of the judge, an individual may receive a term of probation of more than one year instead of time within the prison.
No individual who has been convicted of or involved with a crime of dishonesty will be allowed to apply for admission to the internship program within four years of the conviction.
Crimes of dishonesty include theft, fraud, tax evasion, issuing bad checks, deceptive business practices, perjury, falsifying government records, forgery, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, and furnishing or allowing minors to use alcohol or tobacco. (Note: This list is not all inclusive. If you are not sure if a conviction is for a crime of dishonesty, contact the Human Resource Office at 545-5926.)
No individual convicted of or involved in a crime of violence or a crime of sexual conduct will be allowed to apply for admission to the internship program within four years of the conviction.
No individual who has been convicted for the unlawful use, manufacture, sale or possession for sale of a controlled substance, or who has used said controlled substance will be allowed to apply to the internship program within the following guidelines:
  • Convictions for crimes involving, or the unlawful use of the following controlled substances will result in denial of an application for training/certification for a period of five years: heroin, tolulene, cocaine, PCP, Percodan, tai sticks, methamphetamine, injected amphetamines, injected barbituates, qualudes, crank, Mescaline, Peyote, Opium, Morphine, LSD, Demeral, methadone, and psilocybin/mushrooms.
