Educational Opportunities
Utah State Prison
High School & GED
South Park Academy, operated by the Jordan School District, provides educational opportunities for offenders. Offenders are screened and tested when they first enter prison to determine their individual educational needs. They are mapped into the appropriate educational tracks where they can make the most educational gains and increase their skills during their incarceration.
Literacy
The Literacy program provides offenders with an opportunity to improve reading skills, reading comprehension and math skills. Literacy is defined as scores on state-approved literacy assessment tests that are below the ninth grade levels in math, reading, and/or language areas, or lacking a high school diploma. Grade level completion correlates with recidivism reduction statistics. South Park Academy's instructors monitor the Inmate-to-Inmate Tutoring Program. This tutoring program is designed to help both the student offender and the tutor offender. The student is able to make educational level gains, while tutors learn about positive self-satisfaction and the benefits that come by helping others and contributing to the success of others. Once offenders achieves the necessary level gains, they are moved into an educational track.
GED
Offenders who do not have enough time to earn a high school diploma while incarcerated are encouraged to participate in the GED program. Offenders are tested on a regular basis and their progress is tracked. Receiving a GED qualifies as credits toward earning a high school diploma.
High School
South Park Academy uses an "open enrollment" and offenders may enter the school program at any time. Students work specifically on the credits they need to earn their high school diploma. GED and life skill classes taken by offender while incarcerated helps them earn some of the high school credits needed for graduation.
