Utah State Prison
The Draper Facility offers offenders numerous life skill classes and programs to help promote growth and the skills necessary to promote personal change. Offenders are mapped for life skill classes according to their Level of Service Inventory scores (LSI).
- This National Institute of Corrections program is about restructuring, rethinking, and skill building to reduce recidivism. Thinking for a Change curriculum uses as its core a problem-solving program embellished by both cognitive restructuring and social skills interventions.
- Thinking Errors
- This course is an in-depth cognitive restructuring class that introduces the concept of thinking errors and encourages and motivates personal change. Commitment to Change with Dr. Stanton E. Samenow, Ph.D. is the course curriculum used.
- Anger Management Phase I
- Phase I helps offenders recognize problem situations, and the types of thoughts and feelings that lead to problematic anger. During this course the offender will focus on developing the cognitive and behavior skills, which will enable them to maintain control.
- Anger Management Phase II - Pulling Punches
- The Phase II curriculum is for "Rage Management." It is designed to reveal how anger has controlled the offender through past trauma and how they can learn healthy conflict resolution.
- Impact of Crime Phase I and II
- Impact of Crime classes teach offenders to understand how their crimes have impacted their victims, to accept responsibility for their criminal behavior, to learn how to associate with positive role models, and to become contributing, law-abiding members of society, which prevents future victimization.
- Parenting
- This curriculum is designed to teach offenders the development stages of children in order to promote the essential skills to guide and allow parents to feel comfortable, confident and competent in raising their children.
- Parenting from the Inside
- This curriculum provides offenders with ideas for communicating and staying connected with their children during their incarceration. Special ideas are organized to meet all ages of children.
- Parenting (inter-active)
- This course enables offenders to meet on a regular bases with their children in order to practice positive parenting skills and help promote healthy boundaries.
- Domestic Violence (educational)
- This is a psycho-educational class designed for women offenders, which teaches them to recognize the patterns and cycles of an abusive relationship.
- Domestic Violence (therapy)
- Therapy groups and individual therapeutic sessions are provided for women who have been identified as victims of abuse to help them work through their own trauma and cycle of abuse.
- Financial Literacy
- This course teaches essential financial management skills, which will enable offenders to make informed financial decisions. Students learn about saving, investments, financial planning, setting long and short-term goals, and the consequences of poor financial planning.
- Computer Literacy
- Computer Literacy provides offenders with an opportunity to learn or improve basic computer skills. The students will learn computer terminology, Windows Management, Word Process and they will be tested on typing skills. - Cognitive Core
- Covey: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Powerful lessons in personal change based on Stephen R. Covey’s best selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This course focuses on recognizing, creating and implementing new habits based on correct principles, to affect positive change in lifestyle and behavior. The 8th Habit A continuation of the 7 habits – From effectiveness to greatness, Finding your voice and helping others find theirs.
- Inner Victory
- This class deals with life’s transitions and teaches inmates methods of creating positive and successful experiences while making transitions in life. Transitions such as from prison back to the “real world” and how to be successful on the outside.
- NIC / Thinking for a Change

- Anger Management
- Dealing with basic skill sets necessary to understand anger in its various forms and to learn to respond and deal with anger in a responsible manner. It is a personal development, self-awareness guide to achieving success in life. The objective is to change what you have been doing so you can change what you have been getting.
- Anger-Impulse / Coping
- This class will translate scientific theory into meaningful action, to effectively reduce and manage impulsive responses to anger and stress. Goals are: to teach inmates the complexity of anger and the dangers associated with uncontrolled anger. The class explores what makes us angry, and to become aware of our own anger cues, triggers, signals and reducers. We discuss and examine responses and strategies that provide options and alternatives to aggression and violence.

- This class focuses on preventing relapse to all criminal, compulsive behaviors.
- Critical Thinking
- This course is entirely and exclusively concerned with the development of potential capacities that we have, even though we have not developed them, capacities in that part of our mind known as “intellect.” Most people don’t develop their intellect and use it very ineffectively and often mainly to rationalize or justify infantile or egocentric drives.
- Domestic Violence
- Domestic Violence Awareness, This course focuses on recognizing the patterns and breaking the cycles of domestic violence.
- Elective Classes – High School Credit
- C.D.L. Prep., This course utilizes the Utah Commercial Driver’s Licensing handbook to prepare prospective commercial drivers for taking and passing the state administered CDL test.
- Entrepreneur Smart Start Course
- This is a comprehensive course for business start-ups — helping prospective and budding entrepreneurs understand the steps to succeeding in business and to reach the next level of success.
- Impulse Control
- Self Esteem, The premise of this class is that the foundational pillars of a healthy self-esteem include a sequential development of Unconditional Human Worth followed by the development of Unconditional Love and personal growth.

This curriculum is designed to teach offenders the development stages of children in order to promote the essential skills to guide and allow parents to feel comfortable, confident and competent in raising their children.
Bradshaw: Family Relations, Based on Dr. John Bradshaw’s highly acclaimed PBS series on family relations. The course includes a series of video lectures, each followed by tests formatted for computers.
Bradshaw: Homecoming: Reclaiming Your Inner Child Bradshaw believes that the “neglected, wounded inner child of the past is the major source of human misery. Until we reclaim and champion that child, he will continue to act out and contaminate our adult lives.”
Doctor Dad, This class is best suited for inmates who, after release from prison, will be assisting in raising young children. It is to help dads build their parenting skills in the area of infant and toddler health and to help the dads realize that they play a unique role in their child’s life.
Inside Out Dad, Whereas children who have a father in prison suffer a range of acute psychological difficulties, this course helps fathers develop their knowledge and skills of parenting, and encourages the maintenance of relationships with their children.
Parenting: Love and Logic, Teaching parents how to establish rewarding relationships built on love and trust, using “Love And Logic” techniques. Relationships, Building Family Strength - This class will discuss 10 of the family strengths. It provides knowledge and skills to strengthen families across the life cycle. - Relapse Prevention

- Stress Management
- Positive Living and Health,
The first step in changing who we are is self-awareness. If we don’t become aware of our shortcomings and faults as well as our strengths, we will never change and take steps to improve. This class provides practical advice on fitness, nutrition, exercise, coping and stress management. Information presented is designed to help inmates make informed decisions.
Sports Nutrition and Exercise, The class consists of exercise and discussions on healthy living. Stress Management, This course defines stress and explores attitudes and what makes us “stressed.” We become more aware of what causes stress and identifies individual stress levels. It also examines responses to stress and explores alternative responses while reviewing the latest scientific research on stress. We also learn how to manage stress and how to climb out of the stress trap.
Stress / Coping – Nutrition & Exercise, Focuses on the significant role nutrition and exercise play in maintaining stress-free living, while also discussing coping skills.
The Siddha Yoga Meditation Prison Project - Victim Impact
- Victim Impact I & II, As students of these Victim Impact courses examine the impact various crimes have on victims, it is expected that the focus will always be toward developing empathy for victims of crime. All victims of crime suffer consequences as a result of someone else’s selfishness, greed or need for personal power.
