Open-Ended Employment Positions

Correctional Officer *

$13.26 to $21.03 hourly upon successful completion of academy. Corrections, Central Utah Correctional Facility, Gunnison. Corrections, Institutional Operations, Draper Prison, Field Operations, Salt Lake or Ogden. (Indicate area you wish to work in on your Resume Cover Sheet.) This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results. Maintain security surveillance over programs, activities, and/or housing units of offenders; perform searches and inspections of facilities, persons and their property; collect urine samples for drug testing, perform breathalyzer or other substance abuse analysis and may conduct testing procedures; monitor offenders' compliance to conditions of probation and parole OR monitors inmate activities both visually and audibly depending upon assignment; participate in resolution of disorderly behavior through use of continuum of force (verbal skills, physical restraints and/or firearms); request assistance from other units when necessary; interview offenders and document relevant information; write reports, logs, disciplinary violations, incident reports and other specialized documents; gather information and prepare reports for the courts, Board of Pardons, etc.; counsel & instruct offenders and visitors; conduct clothing issue and laundry exchange; distribute mail; issue commissary items; collect inmate property; transport offenders; supervise offender work projects and offender janitors; organize/maintain files; collate, identify and disburse offender photos or other information; investigate incidents, arrest and detain suspects, handle evidence and carry firearms; provide depositions and testify in court; apply knowledge of community resources by contacting various community and state rehabilitative agencies for the purpose of community service placement and employment verification OR operation of the control room at entrances/exits, process visitor paperwork, depending upon assignment. This is a post certified position. Must be able to become POST certified.

Registered Nurse II

- STEP 41-61, $14.77-$25.42 HR, DRAPER PRISON MEDICAL. JOB PURPOSE AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Provides patient care and crisis intervention in a clinical setting within a correctional environment and throughout the correctional institution. Provides medical judgement and decisions in an emergency medical setting and provides backup to other nursing functions. Supervise Correctional Medical Assistant staff. Member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team. JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS: Must be licensed as an RN in the State of Utah. Written and oral communication skills. Ability to understand nursing protocols and follow providers instructions. Ability to work shift work. Ability to work in prison environment. Interpersonal skills. Ability to drive to locations outside the infirmary. Knowledge of various health education topics. Ability to communicate with patients according to their level of education. Corrections Support Services Officer- Chef *

$12.57 TO $19.91 hourly (Step Range 35-52) Utah State Prison, Draper. Instruct and supervise inmates in all aspects of kitchen work to include handling, preparing and serving food as well as the proper handling and cleaning of equipment; plan, direct and coordinate operations of the culinary unit; prepare menus and food estimates; maintain inventories of supplies and equipment; prepare purchase requests; maintain security of culinary area including accountability for equipment and inmates; complete necessary reports and Documents. Job Requirements/Skills: Skills applying vocational training principles, methods and techniques with particular reference to the instructional specialty; principles, methods and techniques of effective supervision; report writing; inmate behavior and correctional rehabilitation; security procedures; skills to instruct inmates in a vocational specialty within a penal institution; enforce security while instructing inmates; knowledge of food preparation and cooking equipment; knowledge of State of Utah Health Code. Must be POST-certified or certifiable in Utah. (see ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS LAW ENFORCEMENT AND RELATED POSITIONS) This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.   • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment as a peace/correctional officer
  • Fingerprinting and search of local, state and national fingerprint files to determine whether job seeker has a criminal record, final certification to be withheld until this search is completed
  • Shall not have been convicted of a crime for which the job seeker could have been punished by imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or for which the job seeker could have been imprisoned in the penitentiary of this or another state and shall not have been convicted of an offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence, or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance
  • Be the holder of a high school diploma or furnish evidence of successful completion of an examination indicating an equivalent achievement
  • Good moral character as determined by a background investigation
  • Free of any physical, emotional or mental conditions which might adversely affect the performance of duty as a peace/correctional officer as determined through a selection process. Maintenance in the position requires successful completion of at least 40 hours of POST certified professional training per fiscal year, and certification as a POST Category II Peace/ Correctional Officer through the Department of Corrections.
