- Are there inmates in the county jails?
Most of the county jails house prison inmates as part of a contractual
agreement between the jails and the UDC. Inmates may request placement
in a specific county jail. Inmates or their families can get more information
by contacting Inmate Placement Program staff at (801) 545-5558.
- How can I check out what what an inmate is in prison for, when he'll be released, etc?
To obtain information on an inmate, community members may contact prison staff at (801) 576-7000 and request to be connected with an inmate's assigned case worker.
- I am a crime victim and my family and I wish to be notified when a certain inmate is released. Whom do I contact and how?
Crime victims and their families may request notification of an inmate's release by contacting the Board of Pardons and Parole at (801) 261-6464 and asking for the Victim Coordinator.
- I would like to send an inmate some spending money for the canteen and would like to visit him. What are the procedures for visiting, sending money, writing to him, etc?

- How much does it cost to incarcerate an inmate for a year?
It costs about $23,000 a year to incarcerate the average inmate.
- How many prisons does Utah have?
The UDC operates two prison sites, the Utah State Prison (USP) in Draper and the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison. Information about other correctional facilities in the state can be found in the Facilities section of this web site.
- My son is being harassed in prison, and I fear for him. To whom can I report this?

- What's the difference between a jail and a prison?
In most cases, jails incarcerate offenders for sentences of one year or less. Prisons incarcerate offenders for sentences of more than one year.
- How many inmates are in Utah prisons? On Death Row? On community supervision like probation?
There are about 19,000 offenders under the supervision of the UDC. About 5,000 are prison inmates and 14,000 are in the community on probation and parole. Eleven inmates are currently incarcerated under a sentence of death.
- What is Utah method of execution for Death Row inmates?
Utah currently has two methods of execution; lethal injection and firing squad. The choice of which method is carried out is left to the condemned offender.
