Suicide Prevention

Suicide prevention is of paramount importance to the Utah Department of Corrections, and it requires the vigilance and cooperation of clinical and custody staff.

In the November 2007 study,"Ranking America's Mental Health: An Analysis of Depression Across the States", Utah's general civilian population ranked the highest in its age adjusted suicide rate, as well as among the highest rates for depression and severe psychological stress. Since prison is a microcosm of the larger society, it is no surprise that suicide prevention at the Utah State Prison remains a high priority.

Training of correctional staff is a vital component of this effort. You may view the pre-service and in-service training modules, mandatory education for all new hires, and required annual in-service education for existing staff here.
