Robert Powell has been named the new warden at the Utah State Prison in Draper, according to Utah Department of Corrections leaders.
He replaces Larry Benzon, who was recently promoted to Deputy Director in the Division of Prison Operations.
UDC Executive Director Mike Haddon made the announcement in an email to employees on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Robert has served with the Utah Department of Corrections since 1986, when he began his career as a correctional officer at the prison. Robert has had the opportunity to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of diverse populations.
During his career he has served in positions of leadership from sergeant through lieutenant, captain and deputy warden. He accepted the appointment to associate warden in October 2014. Among his many accomplishments during his career, he has had the opportunity to open buildings, implement restrictive housing, transition O-track, enhance recognition of female offenders and has been committed to the development of staff.
Robert has worked tirelessly with tomorrow’s leaders to continue a legacy of enduring professionalism, hard work, relationships, respect for others, and finding the inner passions for personal development that people possess. I have tremendous confidence in Robert and his experience and abilities.
