Utah Department of Corrections Executive Director Mike Haddon announced Friday that Larry Benzon, warden at the Utah State Prison, has accepted the appointment as Deputy Director for the Division of Prison Operations.
"Larry brings an extensive corrections background to this position, and a deep understanding of our mission in helping offenders successfully reenter society," Haddon said. "He is a true leader with both knowledge and compassion. I have tremendous confidence in his abilities and determination."
Benzon served in the US Army from 1984 to 1991. He started with Utah Department of Corrections in 1993 and promoted through the ranks working various custody levels and facilities at the prison. In 1999, he took a position in the Law Enforcement Bureau with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. He was promoted to Captain in 2001 where he gained oversight of the Security Enforcement Unit, SWAT and Uinta 1 housing unit.
In 2014, Benzon served as the training manager for the Pre-Service Academy and as Associate Warden at the Utah State Prison from February 2016 to December 2017 at which time he became warden as the Utah State Prison.
