About Us
The Utah Department of Corrections operates the two state prisons, the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. The UDC also operates six community correctional centers, four in Salt Lake County, one in Weber County and one in Utah County. In addition, about 25 percent of state inmates are housed in county jail facilities as part of the Inmate Placement Program.

Utah State Correctional Facility

The Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF) officially began operations in July 2022. This 200-acre correctional facility is located five miles west of the Salt Lake City International Airport.

Central Utah Correctional Facility

The Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison opened in 1989. It houses up to 1,800 male inmates. It is split in three housing facilities: Henry, opened in 1989, Boulder, opened in 1998-2003, and Monroe, opened in 2016.

Community Correctional Centers

The Utah Department of Corrections currently operates six residential community correctional centers in Utah for offenders who are on probation or who have recently paroled from prison.

Inmate Placement Program

The State’s prison system does not have adequate beds to house all inmates. In 1987 the Utah State Prison reached maximum bed capacity, which led the Department to reach out to county jails throughout the State for help. That situation led to creation of the Inmate Placement Program.
