Certified Positions
Requirements to join certified positions include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Age 19 or older - can apply at 18 and 3/4
- US citizen or permanent resident for 5 years
Disqualifying factors include:
- Applicants may not have a felony conviction as an adult or as a juvenile.
- Applicants may be disqualified for 3 years from the last time they used a controlled substance (see below for details).
- An applicant will be disqualified if they have been dishonorably discharged from the military.
- Any conviction of domestic violence (DV) must be expunged before consideration of certification.
- Applicants will be disqualified for active warrants or warrants that have been active in the past 12 months of application.
- Any probation from the court will be an automatic disqualification. This includes a plea of abeyance.
- Criminal behavior will be considered as part of the hiring process. If you have been convicted or involved in any Class A, B, or C crimes, you can be disqualified depending on the time elapsed from the last occurrence.
- Officers shall not have any neck or head tattoos. Current uniform policy does not allow for the covering of these tattoos.
Omitting information at any point through the hiring process is grounds for automatic disqualification, and will not be allowed to reapply for two years from the omission.
Applicants can be disqualified for 3 years from the last time they used a controlled substance. (To see the full list of schedule I and II drugs, please visit Utah Code Section 58-37-4.) Marijuana and THC have a one (1) year waiting period from your last use. This includes legal, illegal, and medical use.
Below is a list of common schedule I and II controlled substances:
- Methamphetamine
- Acid (LSD)
- Mushrooms (psilocybin)
- PCP
- Heroin
- Fentanyl
- Cocaine
- Morphine
- Opioids
Civilian Positions
All civilian positions require a general background check.
