Mike Schoenfeld

Mike Schoenfeld was named a Deputy Executive Director at the Utah Department of Corrections in March 2025.

Previously, he was the Law Enforcement Bureau Chief for the department, beginning in November 2023.

Schoenfeld began his career in 1996 with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, working patrol on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. He transitioned to the Unified Police Department when it formed in 2010 in collaboration with the Salt Lake County Sheriffs’ Office.

He served with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office in various roles, including Motor Officer, Flight Observer in the Air Unit and Major Accident Team Investigator. Schoenfeld promoted to patrol Sergeant in 2007, serving on the west side of Salt Lake Valley until he was transferred to the Metro Gang Unit. He supervised the Metro Gang Unit until promoting to Lieutenant in 2012. He served as the Investigations Commander and the Executive Officer in the City of Taylorsville until 2016.

In 2016, Schoenfeld was selected to be the Director of the Salt Lake Area Gang Project as a UPD Lieutenant. The project is host to the Metro Gang Unit as well as the Choose Gang Free advocacy project and the Residents Against Graffiti project. He is recognized across the state for his knowledge and expertise in local and national gang trends.

Schoenfeld has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Weber State University where he graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors.
