Previously, both the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) and the Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF) were on lockdown status, pending an investigation into an assault on a Correctional Officer at CUCF.
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, an inmate assaulted an officer within a CUCF Housing Unit. The officer was transferred by ambulance to a local hospital where he is currently in stable condition. Further details and the identities of the officer and the inmate are not being released due to a pending investigation.
Utah Department of Corrections Commissioner Jared Garcia gratefully acknowledges the CUCF team of officers and staff who quickly responded to the assault and addressed the situation.
“The quick and courageous teamwork our people are exhibiting today is a stark contrast to the senseless violence directed at one of our officers,” Commissioner Garcia said. “UDC has zero tolerance for these kinds of attacks. We are unified in our resolve to stop them. I’m proud and grateful to the team who acted with speed and professionalism during this difficult situation, and that our officer will fully recover.”
Peer support and mobile crisis units are on site to support staff.
Both CUCF and USCF will remain on lockdown until the investigation is complete. No visiting or volunteer work will take place during this time.
