Salt Lake City and Gunnison – The Utah Department of Corrections announces the return to regular operations at both the Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF) and the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF), ending the partial lockdown status that has been in place since late September.
This means that normal operations are now back in place for all incarcerated individuals at both facilities (USCF and CUCF), including programming, visitation, recreation, education, and religious services.
UDC leadership placed both facilities on lockdown status after an incarcerated individual at CUCF violently attacked and seriously injured a correctional officer on September 24. UDC immediately initiated an investigation, partially lifting the lockdown in selected housing units as the investigation continued through most of October.
“While we know this partial lockdown caused disruption and frustration, keeping our staff, volunteers, and incarcerated individuals safe will always be our top priority,” Commissioner Jared Garcia said. “We truly appreciate the hard work, patience and cooperation from everyone affected, including our law enforcement and investigative teams as well as the inmate population.”
Commissioner Garcia continued: “I need to again underscore that the September attack on our officer was violent and egregious. Such attacks and threats will not be tolerated, period.”
Facility access and updates are regularly posted on UDC’s official website, corrections.utah.gov. Families, stakeholders and the public are encouraged to check for future updates there.
